It is ideal for various projects, from clothing and home textiles to craft and decorative items.
Why Cotton Yarn?
Choosing cotton yarn for your projects comes with several notable benefits:
- Hypoallergenic and Skin-Friendly: Cotton yarn is naturally hypoallergenic, making it an excellent choice for people with sensitive skin. It reduces the risk of allergic reactions and skin irritations, is ideal for baby garments, and is a product for sensitive skin.
- Breathability and Comfort: Cotton is well-known for its breathability. Garments made from cotton yarn are comfortable in warm weather as they allow air to circulate close to the skin and absorb moisture, keeping the wearer cool and dry.
- Durability and Strength: Cotton fibers are solid and durable, which means items made from cotton yarn can withstand washing and wearing well, maintaining their shape and quality over time.
- Ease of Care: Cotton yarn is easy to wash and care for. It can typically be machine-washed and, in many cases, tumble-dried, making it a practical choice for everyday items.
- Softness: Cotton yarn is naturally soft, and its softness increases with every wash. This makes it ideal for items in direct contact with the skin, such as clothing, blankets, and towels.

Process of Testing and Rating
Testing and rating cotton yarn is comprehensive and multi-faceted, designed to assess various qualities that define the yarn’s overall performance, usability, and appeal. Here’s an overview of the critical aspects involved in this process:
Fiber Quality Assessment
- Staple Length: The length of the cotton fibers is measured. Longer fibers (long-staple cotton) typically result in smoother and firmer yarn.
- Strength and Tenacity: The strength of the fibers is tested to determine how much stress the yarn can withstand before breaking.
- Uniformity: The consistency of fiber thickness and length is evaluated, as uniformity contributes to the overall quality of the spun yarn.
Yarn Construction Analysis
- Twist Factor: This involves measuring the amount of twists per inch in the yarn. The twist affects the strength, drape, and texture of the yarn.
- Ply: The number of strands twisted together to make the yarn is counted. More plies often mean more strength and durability.
Physical and Chemical Testing
- Color Fastness: Tests are conducted to see how well the yarn holds color when exposed to light, washing, and perspiration.
- Shrinkage: The yarn is washed and measured for any shrinkage.
- Absorbency: This is particularly important for cotton, as one of its valued properties is its ability to absorb moisture.
Performance Testing
- Wear and Tear: The yarn is subjected to abrasion tests to see how it withstands wear.
- Pilling Resistance: Tests are conducted to determine how resistant the yarn is to pilling after use.
User Experience Trials
- Knitting and Crocheting Trials: The yarn is used in actual knitting and crocheting projects to assess its handling qualities, such as ease of use, knotting, or splitting.
- Drape and Feel: The final fabric’s drape and feel are evaluated for softness, comfort, and aesthetic appeal.
Environmental and Ethical Standards
- Sustainability: The environmental impact of producing the cotton yarn is assessed, including water and pesticide use.
- Ethical Production: Checks are made to adhere to ethical labor practices in yarn production.
Rating and Classification
- Overall Score: Based on the above factors, an overall score is assigned to the yarn.
- Categorization: Yarns are categorized based on their best uses (e.g., baby clothing, home décor).

Review: A solid choice for cotton projects
User: Laura
I crocheted with this yarn and found it very easy to work with. Minimal splitting or separating. A nice strong snap with each stitch. Tension is easy to maintain. It really highlights the individual stitches/pattern. I’ve used nearly a dozen different brands of cotton yarn to crochet with and this one is on the smoother and softer side.

Review: Nice yarn but absolutely NOT Medium 4 worsted weight
User: J. Green
In short, the yarn itself is easily five stars IF you want a good quality light worsted, 3, DK, etc yarn on the thinner side. But don’t get it if its specifically for a project calling for worsted medium weight weight. The three stars is because the yarn isn’t close to the weight it claims to be and I wasn’t able to use it for my intended project.

Review: Yarn is very thin
User: Sandra
I’m new in crochet and not very familiar with the yarn weight description. Anyways, the thread is so much thinner than I expected. So I will return it. In the picture, the grey yarn is the thickness I expect, and the pink one is the purchased product.

Review: Nice color and texture but too thin and difficult to untangle..
User: Vivian Davis
Bought three of these a few months ago. I just started my project recently, however, is a nightmare to untangle the yarn, as is too thin and the way they are packed is not an easy job after all. They must come up with different idea, as the yarn needs to be converted into a ball before start knitting. Color is nice.

Review: Good 100% cotton yarn, better & cheaper than the smaller Lily balls. Also it doesn’t tangle…
User: Sabiene 🙂
i love this 100% cotton yarn. it’s cheaper than the smaller balls of Lily cotton yarn 4 Oz. it is the same white cotton though. The same thick. Some colors you can’t get in this big spool type cotton yarn. i make a lot of washcloths and towels. Acrylic just does not work out for that, because it is not absorbent as cotton.

Review: Good yarn, but has a strange odor
User: C. Boyea
Good quality cotton yarn, although a bit rough compared to other brands. Would have given it 4 or 5 stars except for a strong odor that is lingering on the whole cone of yarn. Not sure if it was stored next to something with a strong odor, or if something got spilled on it.
